Brown County First Robotics

FIRST Technical Challenge

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a dynamic platform that propels the application of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to new heights for students in grades 7-12. While the challenge is centered around designing, constructing, programming, and operating robots, the experience it offers young minds in Brown County, Wisconsin, goes far beyond the technicalities of robotics. FTC is a journey of discovery, teamwork, resilience, and innovation for the young adults who participate.

In the FIRST Tech Challenge, teams of up to 15 students come together to confront and conquer challenges in an alliance format, a process that does more than test their engineering prowess. Under the guidance and mentorship of adults, these young innovators in Brown County learn invaluable lessons in cooperation, leadership, strategic planning, and problem-solving. They’re not just building robots; they’re building character, honing life skills that will serve them in whatever paths they choose to tread in the future.

What’s unique about FTC is its inclusivity in terms of technology. The reusable robot kit, programmable via various levels of Java-based coding, offers a diverse range of challenges that cater to different skill levels. This inclusivity ensures that every student can contribute meaningfully, regardless of their prior experience with coding or robotics.

However, the learning extends beyond STEM skills. Teams in Brown County are encouraged to embrace entrepreneurship and community service; they’re tasked with raising funds, marketing their team brand, and engaging in community outreach. These activities instill a sense of business acumen and social responsibility, preparing students to be more than technically skilled — they’re becoming well-rounded, community-conscious individuals.

The cherry on top? Participants become eligible for over $80 million in college scholarships, a testament to the program’s commitment to fostering bright futures. And with each season culminating in regional and FIRST Championship events, students are not only given a stage to showcase their hard work but also to celebrate their growth, passion, and achievements. In essence, for the youth of Brown County, the FIRST Tech Challenge is more than a competition; it’s a launching pad for their dreams, ambitions, and contributions to a better world.
